A Definitive Guide To All Of Obama's Daily Show Appearances
At the time of writing this, the United States has just three days left of Barack Obama as President, so we may as well soak up as much as we can. After Obama graced us with his presence on The Daily Show last month, we got a little nostalgic and delved into our archives for some Barry gems and we were not disappointed. So please, won't you join us on a trip down pre-Trump lane?
November 7, 2005: Junior Senator
A super fresh-faced Obama made his first appearance on The Daily Show almost two years before he announced he was running for President. Appearing via satellite, the junior senator chatted about what he'd do if he was in charge of the Iraq policy, and Jon put the pressure on by asking him to name his least favourite senators.
August 22, 2007: Your New Favourite Presidential Candidate
Fast forward two years and Barry is six months into his Presidential campaign. He and Jon take a look at some media spin surrounding the campaign, including Jon's favourite headline "Angry Obama The Pothead Is Not How We Remember Him." When asked if the insanity of a campaign process sunk in yet, Obama remarks that he believes people look to his campaign for normalcy and common sense. Remember normalcy, guys? Us neither.
April 21, 2008: Celebrity Apprentice - Presidential Edition
Still on the campaign trail and slap bang in the middle of the democratic primaries, Obama appeared via satellite from Pennsylvania, which Hillary Clinton later won. Jon asks if the process that presidential candidates are being put through is becoming more like Donald Trump's The Apprentice, in that it has nothing to do with the actual job of being president. This just in: Jon Stewart can see the future.
October 29, 2008: Election Day Cometh
Six days out from election day 2008, Jon asks Barry if he believes white people will actually vote for an African-American at the polls, and if he has any doubts about who his white half will vote for.
Side note: Did anyone else think it was weird when Bill Clinton got casually referred to as "William Jefferson Clinton"?
October 27, 2010: Mr. President
It's been two years since Obama's last Daily Show interview and he's now eighteen months into his Presidency. Times are clearly still tough since the financial crisis, with Jon grilling him on the new healthcare bill, unemployment and the work that still needs to be done to deliver on his promise of change.
October 18, 2012: Another Election
Aaaand we're back into another Presidential campaign. Less than a month before election day in 2012, Barry talks about having an "off night" during one of his debates with Mitt Romney and looks back on his achievements during his first term as President. On a lighter note, Jon asks how many times a week Joe Biden shows up to a meeting in a wet bathing suit. Obama says he had to put a stop to it, but Biden still looks pretty good.
July 21, 2015: Jon's Last Obama Interview
Just over two weeks from Jon Stewart's last episode, Barry issues a new executive order that Jon Stewart can't leave. Obama reflects on his Presidency, remarking that a lot of the work his administration did early on in his tenure is finally starting to bear fruit.
December 12, 2016: Last Daily Show Interview As President
Enter Trevor Noah. This interview is less of a reflection on Obama's presidency and more of a reaction to Donald Trump becoming President-Elect. Obama talks about the Russian email hacking scandal, while Trevor slyly manages to squeeze a comment about John Podesta's risotto email in there. They discuss the Trump administration's intention to make a complete 180 on some of Obama's major initiatives like climate change, healthcare and immigration and how he plans to get back into Michelle's good graces once he becomes a former president.
And there you have it. We hope we've supplied you with enough Obama to get you through Trump's inauguration this week. If not, don't worry about it. We'll all be dead soon anyway.
Catch The Daily Show with Trevor Noah Tuesday to Friday at 11pm on Fetch TV ch108 and 11:55pm on Sky NZ ch11!
