Chef Hires Rat After Watching Pixar Film
A chef in Paris is being questioned by health authorities after it was discovered he hired a street rat as a kitchen hand. Thomas Bernard says he was inspired to employ a rodent in the kitchen after watching the animated Pixar film Ratatouille.
The Michelin star rated restaurant was shut down after a number of diners fell violently ill after eating at the establishment. Health authorities discovered the rat "working" in the kitchen during an inspection.
According to one health inspector: "We were in the kitchen when a large black rodent scurried past with a small chef's hat attached to its head.” Sources report that when questioned about the rat, Mr. Bernard stated: “that's my apprentice.”
The film Ratatouille tells the story of a common rat who dreams of being a chef. Despite the popularity of the film, the real life application of such a concept cannot work. Rats are nonsentient rodents and the lack the basic standards of cleanliness required by occupational health and safety regulations.
Authorities are looking into why staff at the establishment didn't ask Mr. Bernard why he was trying to teach a street rat to cook. Many of the human kitchen hands have refused to speak with media, but one member of staff who wishes to remain unnamed said that they all admired Mr Bernard's willingness to believe in his furry sidekick, and felt it encouraged a positive outlook in the workplace. “A lot of chefs don’t have a healthy work life balance, so we thought Pierre [the rat] brought a positive attitude to the kitchen.”
Following the incident and public outcry, Pixar Animation Studios released a statement addressing the issue: “Pixar is committed to telling animated stories which are powerful but very much set in the world of fiction. Toys are not alive, insects can’t speak English, and rats should not be hired as chefs.”
A close friend of Mr. Bernard spoke with media and stated the chef had experienced a nervous breakdown three months prior, which may have resulted in his irrational mindset. He distinctly recalled one evening when Mr. Bernard sent him a text message reading: "Just watched Ratatouille… I have an idea... this is going to be great."
His friend added that despite being a very good chef, Mr. Bernard was also a complete idiot.
