Sydney Commuters Openly Admit They Hate One Another During Peak Hour
On Tuesday morning, two commuters (previously unknown to one another) were standing uncomfortably close on the 8:26am train from Chatswood to Central. One was listening to music on his smartphone and the other catching up on the latest news headlines.
The commuters tolerated one another for 6 minutes before simultaneously blurting out “I hate you” when they could no longer handle it.
The incident has now sparked a debate about whether we should openly call out people on their obnoxious habits. Whether it’s playing annoying music, taking up too much space, or simply having a dumb face.
The altercation was only verbal and did not escalate – primarily because neither of them expected to actually say the words at the exact same time and in the exact same intonation. Comedy Central briefly interviewed them after they disembarked from the train:
“I noticed his breathing was getting shallow, and a subtle whistling began out his nose. The tinny sound of his awful house music was penetrating my brain. I glared at him and got distracted by the acne scars on his stupid face. As my rage began to build I tried to focus on my own screen but then we looked at each other and just said it…”
“We looked at each other, and instead of just ignoring the very clear eye contact we had made, we both continued to stare and then simply said to each other in a clearly audible volume - I hate you.”
The aftermath of the incident:
