Middle Manager Makes Another Terrible Decision
In a classic case of history repeating, Angus Stevens (a 53 year old middle manager at a large company) has made yet another mistake. Mr Stevens based his latest decision on short-term results, a fear of change, and an inability to take calculated risks.
Mr. Stevens was given the task of rolling out a project to reinvigorate the organisation and boost long-term revenue. But his inability to understand the nature of innovation, market disruption, or the consumer experience has resulted in a fundamentally flawed decision.
Mr. Stevens, who is on the whole not actually good at his job, is nevertheless sufficiently extroverted for his superiors to be happy letting him carry on making terrible decisions. His team is made up of “yes men” and deeply jaded uninspired 20- and 30-somethings.
“I just don’t know what he could have been thinking,” said Jessica, a 26 year old staff member who no longer expects anything better from the generation above her own. “At this point I fundamentally do not understand how or if this place makes money, but I’ll keep pretending to work so long as they keep paying me.”
But Mr. Stevens and his secretary celebrated the latest plan with a go-get-em high five -- which counted for little under the harsh fluorescent lights of modern commerce.
“I think this latest set of decisions will bring big changes to our firm. Cost cutting boosts shareholder value, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do new and exciting things! It’s all about thinking outside the box.”
Reports indicate that Mr. Stevens got the inspiration for his terrible ideas after reading Edward de Bono's The Six Thinking Hats and Sun Tzu’s The Art of War. His superficial and misguided research has equipped him with enough buzz words to help him sleep at night, despite the knowledge, deep down, that he’s probably not doing a great job.
