Commonwealth Games Mascots That Were Rejected
All major sporting events have mascots. Despite the fact that 99.9% of people don't really care about mascots, the tiny people we call children continue to demand society make them for all and any sporting occasion. The latest addition to the black hole of mascot canon is Borobi... a horrific aquatic blue koala.
If you're scratching your head as to why Borobi exists, spare a thought for the ones that were rejected. Here is a list of potential mascots that could have been:
Barry The Banana - Queensland is the home of bananas, so when it was announced the games would be held on the Gold Coast, the idea of a banana mascot named Barry was put forward. Unfortunately this was vetoed after fierce opposition from big fruit lobbies, who claimed Barry was actually their creation.
Adam The Akubra - An akubra hat with legs may make for a funny illustration on the label of an akubra hat, but a mascot it does not make. The tricky thing about designing mascots is that all the good animals have been used, so next in line is inanimate objects. Luckily this idea was rejected because an akubra with eyes is pretty pretty... pretty dumb.
Sammy The Ciggie - Every year, the tobacco lobby puts forward the idea of a cigarrette as a mascot to all and any major sporting events, and every year the entry is rejected. This was no exception.
Common - According to sources within the organising committee, the rapper Common was briefly considered as a mascot. The reasoning was that the word "common" is found in Commonwealth. Unfortunately Common refused to sign over his likeness and being.
Clyde The Thistle Man - Aside from the fact that a thistle man is a frankly confusing concept for a mascot, this idea was rejected because it has already been done. Comedy Central Bench Warmers found out that no one on the organising committee bothered to check if it had been done before. Only after a significant amount of time and money was spent designing this mascot; did the committee realise that Clyde The Thistle Man was actually the mascot of the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
Nothing The Mascot - A bizarre entry was a mascot by the name of "Nothing", Nothing was meant to be a deconstruction of a mascot by literally being nothing... an omnipresent yet absent being which united all mankind. No image of Nothing exists but the designer emailed us to confirm that the organising committee briefly considered the mascot.
There you have it, the disturbing short list of what could have been the mascot of the next Commonwealth Games. Speaking of deconstructing mascots, check out the island of Misfit Mascots via South Park:
