Guess Who’s Back for South Park Season 20? Matt & Trey Explain How They Keep The Show Fresh
South Park season 20 will be airing soon and like all great-animated shows, the series will continue to surprise and shock fans worldwide. Last week, Doug Herzog (a president) discussed the series with creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker at the Paley Center in California which currently housing the South Park 20 Experience exhibit.
“A lot of the jokes moved from the boys to the adults… So [now] it’s Randy who has this big voice… that is who we relate to now.”
Specifically the pair chatted about their process, “We don’t try to make social commentary,” said Parker. “We get into a room six days before we go on the air, and that’s why it ends up being somewhat relevant.”
As expected the series will address the US election, which means Trump and Hillary are sure to return, however Stone said to not expect anything based off of past seasons.
“This is our fourth or fifth season that we’ve done an episode dedicated to the election,” Stone said. “It’s tough to come up with new ideas, but we also don’t want it to take over the season. We need to do more than that.”
“We get into a room six days before we go on the air, and that’s why it ends up being somewhat relevant.”
Matt also touched on an evolution that’s occurred in the show over the years, “A lot of the jokes moved from the boys to the adults,” Stone stated. “So instead of Stan or any of the other boys having this big voice, it’s Randy who has this big voice, and it’s because that is who we relate to now. Luckily Stan has a grandpa, because the jokes will probably move to him eventually.”
The South Park 20 Experience features life-sized replicas of characters and famous moments from the show. Pop culture artist has also created 20 original works for a gallery housed in the exhibit.
Speaking of memorable moments, here are the best moments from that classic Randy episode “The Losing Edge” + More South Park Supercuts:
